The Program

The Highlands United Methodist Church has been an active participant in the Field Education Program of the Divinity School at Duke University since 1996.  This is a two-sided learning opportunity.  Summer Interns are able to experience ministry in a local church and:

bullet

Observe how a congregation interprets and communicates the claims of the Gospel,

bullet

Participate in the significant ministry goals of the congregation, and

bullet

Work with and learn from the congregation's laity and pastors.

In return, the congregation has the privilege of helping the Intern find his/her place in ministry.

In addition to their assigned duties, Summer Intern usually schedule speakers for our Wonderful Wednesdays summer sessions including presentations by members of the Duke Divinity School faculty.  These learning opportunities represent another way that the Highlands United Methodist Church benefits from participating in the Field Education Program.

Betzy Elifrits - Our 2007 Summer Intern

Betzy Elifrits Betzy Elifrits was our Summer Intern for 2007.
Here is her brief biography.
We were pleased to welcome Betzy to the Highlands United Methodist Church.

Betzy was born and raised in Rolla, Missouri, and attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where she earned a B.A. in English, with a secondary education license.  She earned an M.A. in English from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she realized that teaching English might not be her calling in life.  While in college and graduate school, Betzy was very active in campus ministry activities and local church work, also working three summers in rural ministry for the Tennessee Outreach Project (Mountain T.O.P.).  While in graduate school, with the help of her campus minister, Betzy began to consider answering a call into full-time ministry as an ordained clergy member of the United Methodist Church.  Upon graduating from UTK, she decided she needed some time off from school before continuing to seminary, so she spent two years as the Tutoring/Learning Center Director at the Wesley House Community Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she coordinated the elementary after-school program there and assisted coordinating the summer programs.  Betzy began attending Duke Divinity School in the fall of 2006 and plans to enter full-time ordained ministry upon completion of her M.Div. degree in May of 2009.  She would love to end up working as a campus minister, to be a witness to the amazing changes God can work in the lives of college students, just like she experienced as a student.  Betzy's parents relocated to northern Kentucky after she graduated from college, and she has an older sister in Ohio, a twin sister in Illinois, and a wonderful Fiancé in Illinois, who is considering relocating to North Carolina soon!  They are all teachers!
