Living History
Growth and change have been constants at the Highlands United Methodist Church during the
last decade of the 20th Century and the first decade of the 21st Century.
In May 1990, a project was undertaken to
add an activities building to provide space for offices, fellowship hall,
library, conference rooms, classrooms, and storage areas. In addition,
renovation of the sanctuary increased seating capacity by incorporating the
chapel area into the sanctuary, the chancel area was enlarged, a sacristy was
added, and a custom-designed Wicks pipe organ was installed. The
completion of the project was celebrated with a consecration service on June 30,
1991 and on June 6, 1993, the dedication of the educational facility, the
sanctuary renovations, and the hand-stitched kneelers took place. The
mortgage note was burned. The pipe organ was dedicated to the Glory of God
with a special concert.
As
the 20th century drew to a close, it became obvious that
if the church was to remain on Main Street and continue to grow in its
ministry in the community, it would need space for additional facilities.
To provide the room the church needed for future expansion, the church purchased
the one and a half acres across the alleyway behind Fellowship Hall and named it “Wellspring.” The Wellspring
debt was retired in 2001 but the fund remains open and active for those who wish to
pay prior commitments or make donations for upkeep and development of
the
Wellspring property.
In
early 2002, the pipe organ was upgraded with a Rogers Trillium 957 console
capable of playing six ranks of pipes as well as 102 digital stops including
orchestral and choral voices. A comprehensive MIDI system allows access to
an additional 354 sounds through the Rogers Sound Module/Sequencer offering the organist many other musical capabilities to lead the congregation in
worship. The upgraded organ was dedicated on Sunday, October 6, 2002.
